International Women’s Day 2011

This year marks the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.  Although the first National Women’s Day was celebrated across the United States on February 29, 1909, the first International Woman’s Day was recognized in Europe in 1911.  Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland held rallies with more than one million women and men in attendance. Those who attended the rallies demanded better working conditions for women, an end to discrimination on the job, vocational training as well as the right for women to vote and hold public office.  “Less than a week later, on March 25, the tragic Triangle Fire in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working girls, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This event had a significant impact on labour legislation in the United States, and the working conditions leading up to the disaster were invoked during subsequent observances of International Women’s Day” (UN Department of Public Information).

On March 8, 2011, women, men, and children throughout the world will recognize the creativity, strength, determination, and resiliency of women and girls and come together in a celebration of their achievements.
